I'm not sure about everywhere, but in Chicago, we have tons of landfills. (One of which has been in the news for a while because its gas-collection system isn't working right.) In fact, some people joke that the only hills we have in Illinois are actually covered landfill hills. As of 2003, the landfills currently open would take care of things for 13 years (coudn't find newer info). Dumping in the water is only being done illegally, at this point.

We also have organizations that prohibit any dumping into Lake Michigan. In fact, pretty much the entire state (from the Governor on down) is enraged over BP trying to increase the amount of mercury, ammonia, and other sludge that they're allowed to dump into the lake. (The US EPA and Indiana gave them a waiver allowing this, because Indiana will get an additional 70 jobs. That's right--70!) Which reminds me, BP's claims that they're the environmentally friendly oil company are a joke. ...sorry, I jumped off onto a tangent...

We're pretty far from the ocean, so logistically it would be very cost prohibitive to transport that much waste.

These and other government websites have the information you are looking for. No, they do not dump their waste into the ocean. It is however, common to bring sewage to a sewage treatment plant, then after it has been treated, send it to rivers, which empty into the ocean. Usually the water we put down the kitchen and other sinks in the house does not get treated, just sent into the rivers. The system DOES need on overhaul.

I know it WAS true awhile ago but I do not know about that anymore. I would suspect the sewage part would be true as its cheaper to delute sewage with the ocean than treat it. Many coastal cities do it.

I think New York has theirs on barges, let's hope they don't put it in the ocean, it would kill all the marine life.
