I love finding great restaurants. The next few months I will be travelling around Australia with my boyfriend, and I want to know what people think are the best restaurants in Australia.

My first stop will be Victoria (Melbourne), then I will head off to South Australia (Adelaide) then go over to Western Australia (Perth) through the Northern Territory and back to Sydney via Queensland.

Any favourite restaurants from any of those locations will be much appreciated! Thanks!

Yes... they are mainly Asian. But if you walk around the city you'll find enormous choices for food. For Italian, more choices in Lygon St, Carlton. After all... Melbourne is the restaurant capital of Australia :)

Hope this helps. Enjoy your trip :)

In Melbourne and Sydney get the Good Food Guide published each year by the Sydney Morning Herald in Sydney and The Age in Melbourne. They list hundreds of restaurants and rank them. The Guides are available at newsagents and bookshops. I don't know if Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane do the same thing but there are good restaurants in all three cities.

There are expensive retaurants and cheap restaurants and you will find great food in the most unlikely places. If you want inexpensive and good, try King St Newtown in Sydney. Walk down the street and pick a restaurant - there are dozens of them with many different styles of cuisine. Try lunch at Doyles at Watsons Bay for great seafood on the edge of the water.

The Breakfast Creek Hotel in Brisbane used to be famous for it's steakhouse and seafood type meals but whether it has succumbed to it's fame I don't know.

The best meals in Longreach which you may pass through are at the Qantas founders museum. The Jambin Hotel between Biloela and Rockhampton used to be a great place for a pub counter meal. At Young, in N.S.W. the cherry canning factory has decent food.

Canberra, it is difficult to pass up on "Rama's" in the suburb of Pearce for quality Indian style at a modest price. For a slightly more upmarket place try "The Chairman & Madame Yip" or "Lemongrass" for Thai. For a blast from the past try the "Plaka Restaurant" in the Southlands shopping centre or "Woodstock" pizza in the Civic area.

Little country towns. In general when passing through and looking for a bite the best thing is to go for a walk along the main street. If you see a bakery with an expresso machine with a few tables it is usually a good bet for lunch.

At night you are on your own, but if you go "Chinese" which are in most country towns of any size, ask the waitress what she likes. You will probably get something better than the chop suey they dish out to the usual crowd.

For Sydney, it all depends on how much you want to pay. If you aren't too concerned with money, one of my favourites is Tetsuya's. You will have to book early though. Bondi Icebergs on Bondi beach is also a great place for food.

If you want good cheaper meals, Sydney's chinatown is perfect. There is good Yum Cha at the Marigold, and fantastic hand made noodles at the Northern Chinese Dumpling House.

My fave Perth restaurant is Trigg Island Cafe. Great service, awesome view, its right on the ocean, the food is fantastic and the place just has a really relaxed, friendly vibe to it. Damn, you are making me miss Perth now....we moved to Geraldton 2 months ago. If you are ever up here, there is an excellent restaurant called Tides, the food is as good as any i`ve had in Perth.
