I sat and stared at your question for a long time to think. I'm no prude. Profanity doesn't bother me and I swear a lot myself. But I do believe that a Stand up is funnier working clean. My favorites are Jerry Seinfeld, Jay Leno, and David Brenner. I also loved the late Alan King, but never saw him in person; only on TV. And they all work clean. I think Chris Rock's swearing is totally unnecessary. I think he uses it as a crutch. Yes, funnier without profanity. Great question. :)

In principle - no. I don't honestly care if they swear or not. It doesn't make me feel uncomfortable.

However, a lot of comedians use swearing to try and provoke a shock reaction and get the audience to laugh that way. Or they use swearwords instead of being clever and interesting with language. Those comedians who don't swear are often funnier than those who do because they have less of a tendency to fall back on crude jokes that aren't really all that funny.

I used to sort videos for Oxfam (a charity) and it was virtually guaranteed that if the video informed you that it was 'likely to offend' or similar, then the comedian's act would consist of being offensive and swearing a lot, rather than actually being funny.

So no, I don't think that a stand up is funnier when they don't swear, but not swearing does have a habit of coinciding with better comedy.

I"m thinking of all the comics I've ever seen in person in the last 25 years, and I have to say I enjoyed Bill Cosby more than anyone.
Not a word of profanity left his lips, and the entire audience was kept in stitches!

I starred your question because it has merit.
I was talking to my fiance` about this question because we enjoy some of the comedians who are a bit shall we say rough around the edges, that said it all has to do with timing in any comedic presentation. Eddie Murphy for example if you removed every swear word from his comedy show "Raw" there would be no funny to it and the same could be said about Richard Pryor (the god father of dirty comedy)
I do however enjoy Bill Cosby (his Noah comedy was Very Very funny) It all boils down to well placed timing for the profanity.

I have more respect for a Stand-up Comic who gets me rollin without profanities. Nowadays comics use profanity as a cushion for their act, to squeeze out laughter from a bad joke. Refraining from profanity removes that cushion so therefore you as a comedian really must be funny now. Like I said before, mad respect for a clean comic, mad respect.

Profanity is one thing that will definitely make me stop listening. It turns me right off.
Profanity makes people feel uncomfortable, and they might feel like laughing out of their sense of discomfort, or out of their shock that the person would speak in that way. But in my mind, discomfort and shock are a poor substitute for enjoyable fun.

If a comic is good, he/she doesn't need to use profanities. I don't think a "dirty" comic is funny at all.

Yes. I think it's all to do with timing and delivery. I reckon Jack Benny to be the funniest I've ever seen.
