It is far better for him to brush his hair with a shedender or furminator. that thins the coat, and allows for better air flow. Then brush daily to keep the air flow going.
Clipping a St. is not a good idea.

My vet sells them for the same as is on that site.
This ( Shedender) is a bit cheaper, and my groomer uses it on mine, but it is harder to use than the furminator: https://www.shedender.com/Default.asp?tcode=seo&source=catalogsolutions&bhcp=1

i agree that you should brush regulrly rather than shaving. Their fur acts as insulation but it also prevents the sun from burning their skin. You can get their bellies shaved tho. Either have a groomer do it(along with a bath and brush) or do it yourself. Use the shortest attachment and shave from the groin area to the bottom of the rib cage. If you dont go too far on the sides you will not even notice unless you dog is on its back.

Hi there, We have very hot summers and I have a Bernese Mountain Dog, I get his hair clipped right off probably 1/2cm long all over and he loves it, he is a different dog with so much more energy and you can see he is so much more comfortable, I only do it in the middle of spring and end of summer and then let his coat grow long over winter. I too read about the insulation properties and left the coat for his first summer but he was so hot and uncomfortable.

Hi there I am a Veterinarian Technician, own Saints, and work closely with Saint Bernard rescue. I just wanted to mention that Chetco is completely correct. It is NOT a good idea to shave or clip a Saint. I too recommend using the Shedender.
Good luck! Give your Saint a big hug and smooch from one Saint parent to another!!!

Just shave him. We have groomers that do that all the time to big dogs in hot weather.

You can pretty much shave it off. He'll look silly, but his health is more important.
