Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress,
dietary and medical problems. By making
small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
daily routine, relaxing and eating properly,
insomnia can be cured. I found the information
at http://nosleep.in/howtogetsleep.html

Some of us older folks do not produce enough Melatonin (a naturally occuring hormone). Melatonin pills allow you to fall asleep in a very natural way. It does not disrupt dreaming like sleeping pills tend to do. If you do not have a deficet in this hormone, it will make no difference.
If you have taken caffine in tea, this is likely to keep you awake (of course). If you exercise vigorously, you are more likely to sleep. If your mind is racing, you may want to learn meditation in order to calm your mind. Buddhism is not a bad philosophy and it may allow you to move in a more healthful, less Type-A behavior pattern.
There are progressive relaxation techniques where you imagine tightening muscles from the extremes of your limbs slowly toward your body, and then the body itself.
Of course there are medical conditions that prevent deep sleep, like sleep apnea. You'd need to count on your house mates to tell you if you snore. (The snoring itself wakes the person up and prevents deep sleep.) You may need to consult a physician about other conditions.
If you are under great stress in your life, you may need to talk to a good friend or talk to a professional counselor. These people can help you put things in perspective.
Generallly, if you cannot sleep, you should go off and do something else. When you are tired, try sleeping again.

I've had chronic insomnia since college 20 years ago. Some things that have helped me are a strenuous workout before 7 p.m., so strenuous that I can't help but fall asleep because I am so tired.
Reading a book in bed with the classical music station on.
Doing a few yoga poses or stretches in the dark with the classical music on.
They don't always help, but most of the time they are effective for me.

Try this and it really works but you must do it for about 3 minutes.
Take long deep breaths and put a pillow under your feet. The logic behind that is that by lifting your legs, blood will go faster to the rest of the body. Deep breaths will transfer more oxygen to the brain and when it is more than your normal dose, you can become intoxicated (nice cheap way of getting yourself drunk), as much as this sounds weird, it is true.
Try it and report on it next morning.
Hope that helps

There are a couple of things you can do. You can try resting your heart beat (calming down while in the bed), taking deep breaths, sitting in complete darkness, very soft music, warm milk (so THEY say). There's also a WiKi Piki article entitled "How to Sleep Better" Check it out! Hope this helps.

You have 87 hormones in your body and only 6% are for reproduction. DHEA is your youth hormone.
If your nails have ridges on them and they chip easily... You may be suffering from adrenalin exhaustion. This can contribute to insomnia.
Hormones have everything to do with sleep.
If you run out of DHEA from adrenal exhaustion, then your body cannot manufacture the rest of your hormones and your signals run dry to create your sleep hormones.
Adrenal exhaustion can manifest in many of the following: Sleep disorders, panic attacks, rapid heart beat, depression, hot and cold flashes, mood swings etc.
A great way to take care of the problem is to add exercise during the day, don't skip breakfast and eat right, and lots of water and no coffee or energy boosting drinks.
