My wife and I enjoy food and wine but we are also bringing the kids so need a mixture of activities and attractions to entertain them with as well. Where would you recommend?

If you are "bringing the kids" - then I would suggest The Hunter Valley in New South Wales. The area is close enough to Sydney and Newcastle. These two cities themselves will have a lot to offer the kids. It is also within travelling distance to Canberra (which also has a few wineries) and Australia capital city has some cool places for the kids as well as showing them a bit about the history of Australia - eg. The Australian War Memorial (excellent displays and shows), Australian Parliament House,
By all means consider others. As others already suggests- there are plenty to see. The Barossa is the wine growing region so it is worth visiting. Western Australia is beautiful too. Where you go will depends on how old are the kids, how long you are staying in Australia, and how much travelling you can do. Remember that it is a LONG way between Sydney and Perth!

I'm biased because I live in his region - the Yarra Valley. From small boutique wineries such as Allinda to larger ones such as Chateau Yering, De Bortoli or Domaine Chandon - and thats just a very small number in the Valley. You then have the many wineries around Dixons Creek, Coldstream and out to Healesville. Healesville also has the wildlife Sanctuary for the kids, sunrise ballooning over the vineyards. I am sure if you do a yahoo seach on the Yarra Valley it will come up with a host of ideas. The Grand Hotel in Yarra Glen (which is about 100 years old) is a beautiful old place to stay, with great food and a good central base to the whole region. There are also plenty of B & B's. So, just enjoy the beautiful countryside - I do every day!!

I also agree with the above but must add there are many pleasant wine areas in Australia,some that are close to other famous Australian history such as the Rutherglen area in Victoria which is only an hour or less drive to Ned kelly country of Beechworth.You also have the Yarra Valley in Victoria not far from Melbourne,the Hunter Valley north west of Sydney.The list is really endless.All have other attractions for the tourists.I guess it comes down to what sort of a holiday you want.

I think to enjoy the true wine country in Australia, you'd love the Victorian region. Victoria and especially some of the finest wine growing fields can be found across this beautiful region.
Some of the best wines in Australia come from Victorian farmers and wine producers. Victoria's Yarra valley is one region that's used for wine production. It would suit you and your family as a very attractive family destination. There are numerous hotels such as the famous Healesville hotel, which would make an excellent and comforting stay for your family in Yarra valley. Enjoy your time in Victoria!

I agree with above. Make Melbourne your base and visit places around, like Healesville, Mornington Peninsula, Philip Island, Yarra Valley in the Dandenongs. All these places have lot activities and amusements for kids. The Fairy Park at Anakie near Ballarat shall keep children engrossed. The weather in the region is also fine throughout the year. Even 4 weeks may be insufficient.

There are so many.
The Barossa and Mclaren Vale are both close to Adelaide so you could stay in Adelaide and make day trips. You could go up to Clare for the day and try some of the newer wineries in the Adelaide hills. Staying in Adelaide gives you the benefits of the city with the nearby beaches.
A lovely wine and food area is Rutherglen in Victoria just south of the River Murray. There are things to do in Albury and Wangaratta as well as the Rutherglen and Milawa wineries and food specialists in the area. The area is a few hours north of Melbourne so not really suitable for day trips.
The Hunter Valley in NSW is well worth a visit with many fine wineries and food specialists including cheesemakers. The city of Newcastle at the bottom of the valley is a handy base with lots of things for kids while the multitude of wineries will keep you happy for weeks if you want to.
A delightful food and wine area in NSW is the Mudgee region but there are no nearby cities or things for kids to do.
You might like to try the Tenterfield/Stanthorpe area of northern NSW/southern Queensland. There are many wineries and food specialists (including a chocolate maker, olives and a berry farm). If you stayed in Stanthorpe, the Gold Coast is only two hours away with all the delights of theme parks, beaches etc for the kids.
I know the wines of Margaret River but not the area so I can't really comment. There are other wine areas like the Yarra Valley in Victoria which is closer to Melbourne than Rutherglen and there are wineries in that magical State, Tasmania.
You might have to make more than one trip :o)

Margaret River in WA has the advantage of being within driving distance from some wonderful family destinations.
Theres even a company that hires horse drawn carriages for a family adventure for a weekend. Excellent food and wine, some really pretty scenery and great camping and fishing.

Margaret river in western Australia, it has loads to do in the region that the kids and you will enjoy. the wines are some of the best especially the white port. that whole area is just beautiful, i spent a month seeing that region about 2 years ago and we loved it.

My personal preference is the Langhorne Creek region. The wines are superior, and there are very few tourists. It is a short drive from there to Adelaide for the night life, or you can visit Strathalbyn for a day of shopping and antiqueing.
Make certain you visit Max at Cleggert Winery and try his Cab varient, Shalistan. It is superior! Take the kids to Victor Harbor and see the penguins. It is only about 45 minutes away from Langhorne Creek. Take the tourist train from Goolwa to Victor Harbor to add to the fun of the day for the kids.

The Yarra Valley is close to Melbourne. Puffing BIlly (steam train) is in the general area and is always a hit with the kids.
Australia is a big country and where you go really depends on what sort of holiday/vacation you are looking for.
