sooo my parents took out a bunch of loans for me to go to school... and well I'm neither selfish nor ungrateful, but after two and a half years, it just didn't work out for me. I kept changing my major, I hated the school I was at ( I asked my dad if I could transfer, he said if I did he would not pay for my schooling anymore) . Well for almost a year now I have been wanting to join the air force, and for 6 months I have been at community college to prevent mine and my parents loans from coming out of deferment. If I join the military 3 months later my parents are going to be required to pay. Is there anyway around this. I just know how my dads heart will break when he gets the first bill for the degree I did not get. I still plan to get my degree I just want to finish in the military before my parents that out another 50,000 in loans. Eventhough they would rather do that than have me join the air force. I'm afraid to break their heart. any help advice

so my question is, it there anyway to prevent them from coming out of defferement until I am actually done with school even if I am in the military? I know I can continue to defer mine it is my parents I am worried about. And when I re enroll in school in the military will the loans go back into deferment if I can prove I am in school?
and if you want you can give me advice about the whole situation, I will listen and be receptive... Thanks everybod

ok i'm asking about loan deferment... not so no my parents should not slaughter me because I have not joined the military just yet, and I'm actually trying to save them 50,000 dollars, by doing something cheaper. and my dad is still against me transferring or doing anything but going to the school he wants me to go to.

Only loans in YOUR name can be deferred while you are in the military.

They will be required to begin paying on the ones in their name as soon as you stop going to school.

Personally, sounds like too many conditions were put on you to begin with.. and you obviously were not happy with what your father tried to make you do. This is NOT your fault, this is your parents' fault. They should not have placed conditions on the loans, nor should they be allowed to make you feel guilty about choosing a different path for yourself.

If you wanted to be a nice guy, you could offer to give them payments towards the loans or even part of any bonuses you get

Well....you said you parents took out the loans. That makes them responsible for paying them. Loans can be deferred for sometime but not indefinitely. If you want to join the airforce you can certainly use your pay from the military to pay your student loans or even possibly get a loan from the military itself to pay them off. Good luck. But, my advice is to not waste all the money already spent and stay in school....maybe your dad will let you transfer if you tell him you are serious about leaving school altogether.

I depends on the type of loan. If it was an equity loan from their home etc. not sure. If it was strictly a student loan with the low interest rates, sometimes, depending on what career move you decide to make with the military, they will pay off your loans and in return you pay them back thru service. I know many who have had the military put them through med school and back then they had to do 7 years of service with the military. THis was the 70's.

Some types of student loans may provide deferment for military. However, a better solution would be for you to make the payments from your military salary.
