I think that in 40 years, this fight will be history and the new "invaders" will be some new country. The irish were seen as an abomination sent to destroy America. The Italians were mocked and hated- The racist word WOP comes from without papers (being undocumented). Each group goes through this, it just gets scarier each time because we are able to "openly hate" after 9/11. It will pass, there will be assimilation, and, history will report it the same as each other race.

In some ways they are similarities, but there are some main differences, some good some not so good. The Irish had the advantage of speaking English as their native language. Both came from a mostly Catholic backgrounds, and most came from a loving and large family.
Now the not so good, the Irish came at a time of a country that was half empty and needed to be industrialize, for the most part our country has been built and those jobs are not needed. When the Irish came their was no safety net, so you and your family received no food stamps, health care, or other social welfare programs. Now the illegals, not only Mexicans are bleeding us dry, simply put we can not afford to care for their needs. A lot of Irish would have their babies at home because they could not afford the hospitals bills, not so with anchor babies, we also pick up the tab. The Irish had to leave behind their lives and start anew, with phones, planes, cars, and being it's not across the ocean, Mexicans do not have to leave their way of life behind and start anew. There came a time that the Irish were no longer needed, and were not alowed to immigrate in such large numbers, the Mexicans keep coming and will keep coming in large numbers in less we stop illigal immirgration. And my final point is that with the Irish we were incontrol of the numbers, for our needs, not theirs, where with the Mexicans and others illigals they want to be in control of our immigraton policy for their needs not ours

Invasion could be a ton of human beings coming in with the reason to kill, rob, and so on. You call it (actual war). that's unlawful immigration, ordinary as that.

Yes, and they already are.
Mexicans have been in the US for decades. Some already have grandchildren in the US. So if that's not a generational success of surviving and thriving (they moved to US in order to give a better life to their family), I don't know what it is.
Remember that success is not seen in the same way by everyone. While for lots of Americans success means to become a hero, famous or rich, for Latinamericans success is normally around getting the best for your family, as good education, a good work and an owned house.

I think their has been doubts about every ethnic group assimilating into American society. This train of thought predates the American Revolution when Ben Franklin was very critical of German immigrants living around Philadelphia during several speeches in the Pennsylvania Colonial Assembly.
Hispanics are no different than the Germans, Scots, Irish, Italians, Greeks, Poles, Russians, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, etc... in this aspect. Now each of these groups faced a different set of problems based on their circumstances, but they all had issues in regards to their assimilation.

There are many Americans of Mexican descent who are very success full at different levels and people that are working hard to become citizens in our great Country.
I think there is misunderstanding some of our fellow Americans of the lighter shade just seem to come off as lets get rid of "those little greasy brown people" which sometimes is misunderstood by some.
I find it interesting that we don't really hear about all of the middle easterners that are here illegally and getting swooped of the street like what is happening to people who haven't committed any crimes. How many "Mexicans, south Americans were in those hijacked airplanes or blew up buildings? ...hmmmmm. The majority of these people are here earning a honest living. For alot of these folks, it's hard to want to be part of something that hates you, even alot of us US Born's being called wetbacks and beaners etc.
This is more complicated that my attempt to answer your question but . By the way, I was born here, served in the military, city govt. and am also a prod American, Ya know what they say about walking a mile in the others moccasins
Mr. "FEDUP" proves my point about bigotry. Hatred runs deep, "illegal immigration is just an excuse for alot of people to display their prejudice and ignorance as so prefectly modeled by "fedup" It's kind of comical how these people want everyone to be like them when they spout all of this superiorty crap!

I think they might, but they have a harder time than the Irish. The Irish came in knowing English. The Economy was different then, and now that the middle class is dissapearing, it's harder to be rich if there is a societal gap between rich and poor. The other thing that would help to make the Hispanics successful is for their immigration to stop. A community has a hard time moving up, if the poor keeps pouring in. Its like bailing water in a boat with a huge hole.

I completely agree. It has always been like this throughout history. With the Irish, the Chinese, and with the 'Okies' (when they migrated to California). As time goes on, people are going to have to find another "group" to blame their problems on.

The Irish are proud to be Americans first. Did your ever see a St. Patrick's Day parade in N.Y.? They were also waving the American Flag. When I think about it I am not even sure if they had a Irish Flag or not...

I know a lot of successful Mexicans - but they are not here illegally. Very successful I might add.
One of the problems I see is that a lot of supporters of immigration have a very self - righteous attitude. They think they are owed something. They don't realize simple things! Like........you're here illegally - that means you are breaking the law! I don't understand why it's so hard for them to grasp that. Many people have tried different analogies to explain this, but they still don't get it.
Unfortunately the younger generation is taught this nonsense that the 'bad Americans' all hate us and they are just racists!
And some Mexicans are racists, just as well. I can't tell you how many times I have heard racial slurs in spanish. so, don't say that they aren't racists.
