depends.. there is no out of pocket costs for you to take the ASVAB or to speak with the Classifiers at MEPS. BUT if you have issues that require additional work, such as getting medical tests done, or conditions treated, the military will not pay for it, you do.

and yes, you are charged for your uniforms and other stuff you get at Boot camp, but they give you an advance on your salary when you report.

No, it doesn't cost you any upfront money. If you really want to join and you are qualified, recruiter's are given a monthly allowance if you need a ride to and from the recruiter's station, they can come and pick you up. They have government cars as well to give you rides. They can provide lunch for you if you are there for long periods of time. You will be paying by time and eventually your commitment to your country. Medical tests, anything additional is usually done at MEPS and will not cost you anything.

Normally it doesn't cost any money to join the Marines, but if you insist, maybe they'll make an exception and let you pay to join.

No it does not cost money, but it does cost in blood, sweat and tears. The basic uniforms are given to you. You have too buy your dress blues.
