i grew up in a conservative nation where all christians were considered sinners if they did not come to church or prayed with their hair covered. So it is still very widely practiced. That was one of the major culture shocks for me when i immigrated to the united states

It's an old tradition of sanctifying the temple of God or any place of holy learning. It started in the Old Testament times when men wear head covering when entering the temple courts or when reading the scriptures in the synagogues. When Christianity came, she borrowed most of the old Jewish practices, which include head covering. So as not to emphasize too much "jewishness" in the practice, the church used Paul's exhortation in 1 Corinthians 11:1-13 to teach women to cover their head while praying or going to church. these verses was still used to justify the practice of women coveringtheir heads even outside the church - for they glorify (or place abiove themselves) men fro which they came. Of course, we don't practice this theology anymore, since we believe that all men and women were created equal before God.

In the past? In my area, some women are still wearing headcoverings. Surely, you've seen the Mennonites and other women wearing headcoverings, right? There are many sites where Christian women can purchase headcoverings, such as this one:
http://www.headcoverings.com/
The practice came from a Biblical passage in Corinthians about covering one's head as a sign of modesty while at prayer. In my own church, I occasionally see women with headcoverings, but it's not half as common as it used to be. It's fairly rare to see them wearing chapel veils and other coverings, but some still do. I have a friend who doesn't leave the house without her head being covered.

1Cr 11:5 But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with [her] head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.
1Cr 11:6 For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.

ahhhh in the past.... well because they believed in "innocence" and that "showing your body is vulgar" (by "body" I mean every single spot)
ahhh and because of stupid habits
and because they were raised "to do whatever it is told to them to do"
