Is this normal, or is it time to adopt a new dog so he can have a buddy?

Its an aussie mix, get walked everyday. and play with him. But lately, there hasn't been any dogs around for him to play, and sometimes he dosen't get a long with neighbor's dog(doberman pinscher & boxer) and my dog's too hyper with this other one, and the golden retriever he usually plays with get walked at night time, when i'm usually sleeping. pretty much the only dogs in my neighborhood.

He could be hearing something like an emergency vehicle siren or something going on close by, or maybe he is just dreaming! I have a wolf hybrid and a basset/springer spaniel mix and the only time that they howl is when they hear sirens( the wolf also howls when he is lonely or bored) so maybe that is your canine friends problem..maybe he just needs a friend! I would schedule him a vet check up to make sure that everything looks okay and then maybe consider getting him a new pal....doesn't have to be a big dog, but another dog just the same for company. Good luck!

One of my dogs did this 3 times during her 12yr life. She was dreaming, and started howling IN HER SLEEP! She was on my bed. It scared the CRAP out of me. I realized it was her, sat up, gently shook her awake. The howling stopped and we all went back to sleep. It was pretty funny afterwards.

If the dogs howling all the time, somethings up, but I doubt it's something a companion could fix. If it's just occasionally, maybe it's a dog dream.

You think your dog is strange? We had a Rotti that would occasionally howl when he was sleeping. It started when he was about 6 years old. He was healthy and normal in every other respect and had two other dogs to keep him company.

yes, dogs are VERY social. But theres also other possibilities like: is there a mean kid a couple doors down with a dog whistle? is he sick? scared of the dark? uncomfortable? got ear mites? After you get him checked by a vet, go ahead and get your puppy dog a pal

it would depend on what sort of dog you have to determine whether its normal or not. it could also jus be him responding to something down the street.
