Are they trained to be like that

They get very tired of saying "No, you can't have a visa to the U.S." over and over again all day long. It is demoralizing and depressing. Every Foreign Service Officer has to stand in the visa line at the consulate on their first tour, whether that is their career field or not. They have to deal with fraudulent documents, angry clientele, sloppy paperwork, and hear a million stories about personal problems that may or may not be true. They don't mean to be rude - they are brusque because they become hardened from everyone they meet wanting a visa from them - not only at work, but their neighbors, their waiters, and their taxi drivers. Two years of constantly denial wears them out.

Many government agencies are like that. I think there are several factors that contribute to that attitude.

One, the government isn't concerned with customer satisfaction - what, you're going to switch to another government? Ha!

Two, many civil service jobs are thankless, routine, and dull; plus they often have incompetent managers and political appointees making their jobs tougher.

Three, when you're near the bottom of the food chain, you pick on those even lower.

Four, if you're too nice to the outsiders, it's like feeding a stray kitten - they won't go away. (I think this last in particular applies to embassy personnel.)

Are they REALLY!?!

My guess is like other working class people, they are tired of the same old same old long, boring shifts, and take the burden of that same old regimen and take it out on their customers - how rude!

It's life though, and they'll have it coming to them - it's a lot easier to be mean to people then spread smiles, so it's their problem, and it'll only come back at them.

Amusingly, I intend on joining that personnel, and thanks to you, I'll go out of my way to bring myself out of the slump of being down when I'm stricken with it, and make an extra effort to be nice! Thanks for contributing to the world! :)

We get sick and tired of answering the same stupid questions day in and day out! My little girl's lost, what do we do? Someone stole our money, what do we do? My husband was shot, what do I do, and so and so on. It's enough to make anyone sick. And who says we're rude! We're trained to control ourselves, do you hear me! Control ourselves!

NO SOME PEOPLE ARE BORN WITH A TINY STICK STUCK IN THEIR ANUS AND WHEN THEY GET A LITTLE POWER OR THINK THEY HAVE POWER. THEY LEAN BACK ON THE STICK SO MUCH IT HURTS THEM SO THEY ACT SHI-TTY TO EVERYONE ON PURPOSE.
DONT LET IT GET TO YOU.
