It really all depends on where you live in California. I can find you a cheap house in Cali, but it is a little harder for me to find you one in Hawaii...especially one on Oahu. I have all kinds of stats and it appears that Hawaii is prob over all more expensive when you factor in all the intangibles including travel, insurance, taxes etc. I still like Hawaii though. :)

Hawaii is more expensive due to the "lava" insurance. While California does enjoy a known fault line, Hawaii also enjoys lava flow which is constant and never ending. Insurance is the key expense in both locations.
Southern California hosts a number of wealthy inhabitants as does Hawaii, but not to such a magnitude. California is rather large in comparison with Hawaii, yet the per capital business would be won in Hawaii, based upon land mass.
I'd rather live in Hawaii than California because the people there are inviting and those that are accommodating. Those in California are not nearly like this.

Hawaii is more expensive then Cali. I live in Cali my entire life and have had several friends that are from here that are in the military and were stationed in Hawaii and they told me it is more expensive then Cali. Although Cali is high in price considering the rest of the US, but Hawaii cost of living is about 15% more.

Hawaii. As a sidebar, if you like to travel, it's even more expensive to be based in Hawaii, airfares are more expensive out of HNL than LAX for some reason, even heading to Asia.

Both are very pricey. I live in So Cal. I almost moved to Hawaii but it is soooo expensive. Everything has to be brought in ex...gas, cars, most food, sundries, household goods including furniture and the likes. Bringing all that in costs alot in shipping, port costs. The cost has to be picked up somewhere and it's the consumer that pays.

Monster online used to have a place you could compare cost of living against each other - go look there - it breaks everything down - food, housing etc.
