In advancing age should be an asset. You will have to ask yourself why you are not and others are. If you want to learn more things, sometimes you have to let people know you are interested in doing more. If you think that you are doing more than adequate on your job and you think that management notices, they may not. You have to be sure you are noticed. Be sure you speak to everyone and if you have any ideas about doing something in a better way, bring it up. You will have to figure out how to show management how well you are doing the job(and be sure you are) and that you are capable of so much more. If they believe you, you will be promoted. If you just do your job and nothing more, you will not be noticed. Lots of Luck.

Taxman has some good ideas. but I would find something that looks better and pays better THEN go to your boss tell them that you are looking for work elsewhere because you want more money and more responsibility. If they say "Great" then move on. If they express an interest in keeping (because maybe your really good at what you do) then you have some tools to negotiate with.
If it falls through you have some place else to go.
I am not young either and starting over is not my idea of fun... Give your boss a chance but back up your plan

Yeah, your age shouldn't affect your thinking or your career. Like someone said earlier, the older you are, the wiser you become.
All I can say is that if you haven't been advanced or been offered a new position or job, go out and look. You never know; you might find a better job with bigger pay. You just need to look.

Speak up! Sometimes advancements only comes to those who asks... example maybe the postion your doing, they think you like. So they haven't moved you to a better postion. If you work in retail, example supermarket, or department store. You really can't fight over anything there low payin jobs, i mean there really isn't an advancement beside being a department manager and you can't argue these postions because your goin to lose. If you don't feel happy what your doing then find something you like. But in the mean time keep your own job.

Have you asked why you haven't gotten promoted? Does your supervisor evaluate you every year? Maybe you should ask. If you work in a large company, go to human resources and ask about other jobs. Maybe the others let it be known that they were interested in advancement. Don't wait for them to ask you -- ask them!
As for extra skills, are there colleges around with adult education programs?
Otherwise, maybe you could look for another job before quitting this one. And let them know you're interested in advancement! For instance, ask if they promote in-house -- that's a subtle way to ask.
Good luck!

Eight years is a long time to be in the same job. I'd find a job counselor who can help you make a decision about what to do with your career.
It's never too late to get additional education or training.

Don't let being old affect your thinking. Senior employees are proven to have high work ethics and be punctual on getting to work. Use your day off to look for another job and find one befor you quit the one you have. It never hurts to look!

Have you shown any interest to your bosses about wanting to climb the ladder? Have you shown initiative about wanting to learn new things, asking your boss to teach you new things? It's not about how old you are or how long you have been with the company, it's about whether you have management qualities.
