I'm sure you've heard this before, but if your friends are making fun of you then they are not really your friends. But that being said, are they making fun to hurt you or are they just trying to be funny and taking it too far? I have some friends that when they found out that I am a vegetarian would make jokes or say that it was "unnatural", but after a little while most stopped and the ones who didn't I no longer speak to.
If you want to be a vegan, go for it! It's wonderful that your family is supportive, but even if they were not, this is something that is your decision and it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. You'll feel much better once you take up the vegan lifestyle.
Check out www.goveg.com for some help with getting started. They have lots of great recipes and lists of foods that are vegan(you'd be surprised at how many foods have animal products in them) You can also sign up to receive a free starter kit.

Sand..... You can be vegan with low iron levels. I have iron deficiency anemia and have had no problems with not eating animals. There is iron in a ton of foods, like spinach and beans including soy.

ignore your friends first of all!

second, one of my best friends, Courtney, is a vegan, and she is darn proud of it! I'd like to be a vegan for a week and see if it helps my anxiety, but because I have low iron levels, i cannot do such a thing.

Your friends are not right, and if your family is supporting you, then go for it. Your family is the best of friends that you should ever have...good luck =)

being a vegan is a personal dietary choice that someone makes, right? so it doesn't matter what your friends think cause it's not some kind of fashion trend. it's a diet choice you make. it may concern them because you won't be having burgers and such with them, but if you feel strongly about your health, that's a good thing!
your parents are smart. ask them for help in what foods to make, snacks, etc. i don't know much about vegan diets, but it sounds good to me (being sure to have a variety)

Follow your own choices and ignore them. It is not my choice, but I don't fault anyone else for how they to choose to nourish their bodies.
