auto racing is not a sport, it's an activity.

How do you get in shape by looking at any sport? Don't mean by performing the same actions we see the athletes perform? When's the last time you drove for 4 hours straight? The last time I did, I was very tired, hungry, and thirsty.
How do you get in shape by playing golf? Anyways, in my opinion a sport is a game where numerous people compete for a specific prize. Watch ESPN and auto racing won't be the only sport you question. There's poker, pool, fishing, hunting, etc. Now are those sports, because the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network consider them to be.
NASCAR has sportsmanship, teams, and major sponsors, just like the very physical sports

I believe that NASCAR drivers have to be in about the best shape of any athlete in any sport. To be able to drive for 4 hours in very high temperatures with a helmet on in a restricted space would not be easy. They have to do this and stay focused enough to race at 200 MPH. They face dehydration and fatigue.
Not to mention, this sport has the small issue that if you wreck just right . . . you die.

Somewhat of an interesting angle on an old question.
Assuming you are talking about a fans perspective I'd say to get a program,a pair of binoculars,a scanner and something cold to drink.
Then find a good seat and look over the venue and see the turns then see your position to pit road.
It is next to impossable to follow all 43 cars so find your favorite and let the green flag fall.

NASCAR is not a sport, it is a sanctioning body. Auto racing is a sport.
By your definition, professional football, baseball, basketball, soccer, Olympic track and field, etc., etc., are not "sports" -- because they are all performed by a few professionals for the benefit of a large number of spectators who sit on their butts and watch. If you wish to think that a given game IS a sport when played by friends in a park, but is NOT a sport when played by professionals in a stadium, that is your right. Doesn't make a lot of sense, though.

I remember hearing Bobby Allison used to drive around Alabama with the windows rolled up and the heat on in the middle of summer to help him get used to the heat inside of a NASCAR.

OK...serious answer only.
In those cars going around in circles, it is 130 degrees. I'm not joking. 130 freakin degrees. Those guys driving around in circles are in those 130 degree cars for 4 hours. 4 freakin hours. That is worse than spending the afternoon in sundrenched Death Valley, California. They lose 8 pounds (all sweat) in those 4 hours. that is 3 times as much sweat as an average NBA player sweats off in one game.
Of course they have to get in shape for that!

I think I've decided that your initials stand for "Nature Boy."
That said, you don't get in shape watching any sport- be it auto racing or a marathon.
You are an amusing little man!
