In the past I've donated to the Red Cross exclusively, but I want to see if there are any other organizations that spend donations wiser. Please no PETA charities.

Personally, I'm a fan of finding a local non-profit in your area versus a large national/international charity to donate to. As a general rule, their administrative costs will be lower, as their budgets are substantially smaller and money will most likely go to programming vs. administrative overhead. You can contact your local United Way or BBB for information.

If you are looking for a larger charity, check out Charity Navigator: http://www.charitynavigator.org/ you'll get lots of information on all kinds of charities and how they're doing.

Lastly, know that when you donate money to a nonprofit, you can restrict funds - in other words, if you request your donation go directly to programming, they must follow your wishes.

But please know that even though your dollars may be invested into administrative versus direct programming, it's still beneficial! Without administrative funds, these organizations would not be able to pay staff to implement and develop programming, purchase office supplies (I'm talking pens and copy paper here!), develop fundraising materials, or just simply pay the rent & electric bills!

The National Marrow Donor Program runs on a very tight budget. Oddly enough the location in Minneapolis, MN is the hub for all bone marrow transplants all over the world.

I would strongly suggest looking into their organization.

I wish you well.
