The entire old testament is a story of one tribe's campaign to use their race favoring deity (Jehovah) as a justification to take over the wealth and the land of their neighbors through genocide. If God endorsed genocide once, why not twice?
Don't underestimate the imagination of a Christian. They'll come up with endless rationalisations.

all humans are equally sinners and hard to understand but God sees all sins as equal, so all humans sin, EVEN God fearing humans, but we ask for forgiveness. Bumper sticker says " I'm not perfect, just forgiven"
