Lust, gluttony, sloth, envy, wrath, greed, pride. As most of you probably know, those are called the seven deadly sins.

We have all at some time committed at least one of these, though usually we committ all of them daily.

How, then, is a "sin" determined? How does God judge who to condemn and who to save? By the Christian belief, you are supposed to repent for your sins, and then not repeat them. Well, we all repeat the same sins multiple times, even after repentance. So what is a sin? What is a DEADLY sin? How is the mortality of our soul defined?

I believe Pope Gregory the Great actually came up with and named the seven deadly sins. We all repeat sins because it's human nature. Those seven deadly sins are basically the flaws in humanity. A "deadly" sin, in my opinion, is a sin that will in the end kill you.

according to the Bible and my lay studies, there are 2 contexts where sins are not covered by grace...

1. blasphemy of the Holy Spirit... basically defined as knowingly assigning credit for God's work's/nature to someone/something else (very simplified)

2. repetative sin... hebrews 10 talks about someone who continues to sin, repent and sin... it is my impression that this has more to do with addressing the sincerity of the repentance in the first place...

to address the question about what sin is... i would say that it is better to explore what we are supposed to do rather than what we are not supposed to do...
And He said to him, " 'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.' "This is the great and foremost commandment. "The second is like it, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' “On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets." matthew 22:37-40

Sin can be going above the law of God (transgression). Sin can also be falling short (sin) of the law of God.

Sin is the generic term for acts of omission (example: ignorantly not doing what you God commands) and acts of commission (example: deliberately doing what you know God has commanded you not to do)

The fact that you are helpless to commit sin is proof that you can't live up to the whole law of God or all of His commands and are in need of a Savior (Jesus Christ).

Only Jesus was able to keep the whole law perfectly. So, we take our rest (sabbath) in Jesus by trusting fully in Him for our salvation. God then transfers His righteousness to our account. So, when you appear before God the Father at your death, all He will see is the righteousness of Christ covering you and welcome you into Heaven.

I don't know everything, but in my opinion, it's all about your "intentions". If you want to live a pure life, and you really try hard, REALLY TRY HARD, to live a good life, then God will recognize that. You still sin every day, but it's all about your intentions. If you do something everyday that you KNOW is a sin, yet still do it anyway... that's a no-go and God will see that, and He will disapprove. Sometimes we sin and don't realize we sin, but we repent when we pray... it's all about our intentions. What is your "intent" when you react to situations.....that's just my opinion....God Bless, and have a good day.
