we have several types of trains here (I'm assuming you will
be using either Metrolink or the Metro Rail lines
(since you posted this in Los Angeles)
if you are taking Metro Rail (also know as the Red Line/Gold
Line/Green/Blue Line/Purple line)
you first buy your ticket from a ticket vending machine
and you get a ticket (hold on to that ticket in case a fare
inspector asks to see your tickets)
you could get a day pass as well (either from the ticket Vending machine
If you already have a day pass you got from a Metro operator
thats all you need
-Metrolink is similar (expect they dont honor Metro day passes) or Metro tickets)
as for Amtrak you can either buy your ticket at the ticket
agent or use Amtrak quick ticket machine or buy your ticket
from the conductor but they might charge you extra for that)

You can buy the ticket ahead of time or on the train. Pick a seat and there is a slot to display your ticket for the passing conductor to see your destination. Bags go on board. Seats are airplane seats here in So. Cal.on Amtrak.

Metrolink has self serve ticket dispenser that calculate the fare for you. You can pay with cash or credit. Make sure that you have your ticket on the train or you may be cited and fined.

Depending on where you are, some train stations have windows with a teller person and you can purchase one.
