I go to Fordham in the Bronx. I have never felt severely threatened anywhere in the Bronx. My advice is to never travel alone at night or on the subway. If you don't start anything people are not inclined to start things with you. In my opinion the Bronx is much safer than it used to be, it no longer warrants the term "the Bronx is burning." You will be fine. Just be smart.

I lived in the BX ( get use to calling it that) for 13 years and then in the suburbs of Westchester for 13 years. The BX is like any other big urban city, There's crime, gangs and violence. But I can count on one hand how many times I've seen it in person living there. College in the BX is fun if you live on campus like at Fordham your like in a city with in a city. If you go to one of those commuter school that's cool to because you get to take public transport and usually you see the same people over and over again.
If your looking for housing some helpful hints If you nervous about living by yourself in the Bronx live on campus or in an apartment with other college students which you can find out about at the school. Don't try to move to the projects. Dont live in an area you get a bad vibe about. The Bronx is very very big with different sections like, Norwood, Williamsbridge, Kingsbridge, and Riverdale. And each of these sections have different people living in them just find a place that's comfortable for you.
Good Luck enjoy the Bronx hopefully you'll have a Gyro in the Norwood section or on Fordham rd and then party in Manhattan..

Visit the college and feel it out. Anywhere in the BX is pretty different from a white suburban town, but it doesn't mean you won't be safe and comfortable there. The BX, like all NY, is very diverse, all types of ethnicities and good and bad neighborhoods, sometimes changing drastically within a few blocks. Most likely anywhere around a college will be an ok place to live. Once you are there you will get to know the surrounding areas better and find out where you will feel ok.

The Bronx is big and diverse. There are neighborhoods where, from your description of yourself, it sounds like you would be terrified and unsafe (e.g. Hunts Point), and then there are neighborhoods full of big houses owned by white people (e.g. Riverdale). If you're thinking of going to Fordham, it's in a relatively safe and sedate area, but there are other colleges and you need to get more specific about neighborhoods to really understand what you're getting into.
Good luck.

Stay on campus, either Fordham, Manhattanville, or anywhere else. If you want to roam the streets, do it during daylight. The Bronx is a great borough. Yes, it's gotten better like everywhere else in NYC. Just don't do anything risky, and you'll be fine.
