I really don't mean to be a jerk asking this question...it just seems to be a pattern I'm seeing. Why? Are there any happy, adjusted atheists who don't feel the need to be so sarcastic and cynical?

religion and the religious mindset can be pretty frustrating for atheists. i know is is for me sometimes. cynicism and anger is one way to deal with that. you might get the impression that atheists are cynical and angry about everything, but it's really just religion.

also, why are these questions often addressed to 'the atheist'? which one? if i was being cynical, i might enquire about the undercurrent of stereotyping and black and white thinking in the theist...

I am a happy, well adjusted atheist. However I choose to be sarcastic and cynical since LOGIC seems to bounce right off the believers.

Just here. I come to defend my rights and it makes me a bit fiesty. As soon as I step away from the computer I'm back to my happy, cheerful self. When people ask or preach idiocy, then I tend to let the claws out a bit more. I don't mean to be cynical though. Sarcastic? Heck yeah, sarcasm is funny. :)

Have you seen the way "Christians" (and to a lesser extent other faiths) behave toward atheists here? Insults as easy as breathing, constant lying, even advocating violence.

I have not seen a single post from an atheist here that even approaches the hatred, arrogance, and willful ignorance exhibited by some self-proclaimed "Christians."

How can you not notice this?

Okay, here's my reason: I wasted so much of my life in a religion that was obsessed with dying and damnation that it's tainted me in a way. I was guilted into thinking I was a bad person because I couldn't believe in God, and it took years out of my life to rid myself of that guilt. Those people don't deserve anything but anger from me. Oh, and I failed to mention I've got a disorder called borderline personality disorder which is characterized by "inappropriate, uncontrollable anger". So, I'm just predisposed to anger and sarcasm.

We are happy, we are adjusted. We get cynical and sarcastic becasue talking to christians and asking intelligent questions meets with the same old brainwahsed robotic mindless crap we are sick of hearing. Answer the darn question, don't spout passages from your script.

I am happy and well-adjusted. That doesn't mean I have to take crap from people or find anything to respect in beliefs they hold for no reason. Don't confuse natural skepticism with unhappiness - you'll be a lot more happy if you don't just take everyone at their word. Including that used car salesman.

if I thought cynism was a necessarily bad thing then I would understand your question better as for anger I see less of it than one who regularly haunts YA would . Cynism is a greek philosophical tain of thought with considerable virtue .

Why call people names if you cannot answer the questions posted by atheists?
