Just talk to people!! We Americans LOVE the Aussie accent, so that should open a few doors for you. Americans are very inquisitive about other cultures, so expect so pretty dumb questions like "How many kangaroos do you own?" Just go with it...I've have never met an Australian who didn't have a wonderful personality. I am sure you will not have a problem meeting new friends, finding work, etc. Look for a MOMS (or similar) group in your new neighborhood. Basically they are play dates for moms and kids - a good way to meet people your age with children your age. Look into gymnastics, dance, soccer, etc., for your 3 year old. Another good way to meet people with similar interests. Church is a given - a ready made, accept you as you are family. Don't worry!! You will do just great! And welcome to the US!! If you end up near Northern Kentucky/Southern Ohio/Western Indiana, let me know!!

What part of the country? I have lived mainly in the south and you will find that most southern states are very friendly, as are most Americans....despite what you may see on the news. You will be fine. Join a club of some sort or do some community service. You'll meet people easily. My fellow americans will get a kick out of your aussie accent. If you come to clarksville, tennessee, Send me a message. Don't worry. Things will be great.

Nothing like a big change in life.
One of my cousin's moved to Australia to live with her husband. (Husband is from Australia, Cousin is from the U.S.). According to my Cousin the main difference is the climate. She told us that during Christmas her family was playing on the slip and slide because it was like summer time there! Just think, Christmas will be cold and possibly white with snow. Other than the climate and season differences, everything else is the same according to my cousin.
As others have stated, us American's love the Australian accent! This country is so diverse with culture you will be perfectly fine! As for friends, find your hobbies and activities that you currently like in your new area and you will more than likely make tons of friends.

I'm the same way too, I moved from other country to join my husband here in US. At first I don't know what to expect, but then as look forward and try to observe things basically everything is the same. To tell you what, people are people. You can expect same stuff, and people here as I observe most of them are nice.
They are very warm and friendly (but don't expect too much). To me it's just like home, just don't hold back on the memories, of course you don't forget where you came from. Just try to make it your home. And if you are a church person, you can start from there.

make sure you try get involved in a moms club ( a club with neighborhood moms who take the kids to the park and share mothering stories,do activities for the kids, trade dinner recepies, go on outings and do fun family things. look on your local channel for community events, get involved in a head start program for your 3 year old. dont worry you will adjust and everything will be fine. your kids will be your opening to a new world. good luck.

Stay over there, this country is run by morons. I'm not trying to be negative or to put my country down but it's true. If I had the choice I wouldn't live here right now. 2009 seems so far away. I'm ashamed to be American these days.

You'll do swimmingly here in the States. We Yanks are very welcoming to our friends from "Down Under."
And besides, you'll get to watch the toilet flush in the opposite direction that you're used to.
