I think your question is the essence of a famous divide in how history is conceived, Do individuals make history happen? Or would the events happen anyway (because if that person were not the doer then someone else would have done something similar, that is the times themselves produce people who will take certain actions). The Columbus example is a good one: if Columbus had not sailed to the Americas do you seriously think that no one else would have? Whoever did that would then become the Columbus figure. It would be a different individual but the action would have been the same. And probably the results.
