Placebos have even been shown to cause unpleasant side effects. Dermatitis medicamentosa and angioneurotic edema have resulted from placebo therapy. There are even reports of people becoming addicted to placebos.

In general a placebo is just sugar pill. They're a control group in a study. If he was taking the placebo, in whatever study he participated in then someone else was taking the actual medication. The purpose of them is to see what medical conditions are actually related to the medication, and which ones are related to the people in the study.
Most people enterng these studies sign waivers stating that they are doing so voluntarily and that the company will not be held responsible for anything that happens to the participants.
There's no harm in talking to a lawyer, but I'm not sure you'll get too far. You will not only have to prove that he did NOT sign a waiver, but that he had no other health problems that could have caused his death.

There is no harm in starting the active pills whenever your period ends. Many women never take the placebo as a way of avoiding their period. Whether or not you're protected for those few days if you finish the placebos....well, you told me not to say it....

You cant sue anyone. Placebo's are sugar pills. Just because he was taking a placebo doesn't means thats what caused his death. Besides, if he really was taking a placebo he wouldn't know it, because thats the whole point of the experiment!
