...I have been practicing martial arts since I was five and I wanted to try eskrima. Is it effective to defend yourself or others with (also just for the sake of satisfying my inner kid, can eskrima techniques be used with nunchaku)?

There is a type of filipino nunchaku but it has a longer chain and shorter handles so handling it is different from a japanese style pair of chucks.

Escrima is widely known for being a simple and effective form of self defense. However if someone says that lapu-lapu killed magellan and his soldiers with sticks, they are lying. It was done with spears, bows, and sheer numbers. The firearms would have been difficult to use in the jungle but the metal armor would have made the sticks ineffective.

Escrima is a very effective form of self defense especially if you are being attacked by a person that is armed with a knife or stick. In addition to being a very effective weapon fighting system it involves many awesom and effective empty handed techniques. As for techniques that involve a nunchaku, I'm not sure, but it is defineately a very effective form of self defense.

Yes, it's probably one of the more useful weapon self defenses as you can almost always find a stick to use to defend yourself.

Watch the 2nd episode of Human Weapon on the History channel. They showed a little about the history of Kali or Escrima.

Escrima is also grappling with a stick/knife, and knife fighting too. But Sticks being the main weapon.

And really, the sticks take the place of machete while fighting in the ring. But in a military use, they use bayonets or machetes instead of sticks.

It's good enough to use in a tight spot, but then any weapon based MA usually has an advantage over empty hand arts.

@ R.Lee, Yup, Magellan got slaughtered because he didn't scout out the terrain in Mactan before attacking, his ship entered the coast at low tide so he and his men had to walk on the coral floored beach half a kilometer in waist to knee deep sea water which made their gunpowder wet and useless. The distance of the ship from the shore also rendered their cannons useless as they were out of range. The heavy metal armor hampered their movement when Lapu-lapu and his barefoot and loincloth clad warriors came charging at them halfway to the shore and started a skirmish in the water and sandy beach. And if I remember my history right, Magellan got hit on the leg with either an arrow or a spear, making him stumble whereupon a dozen natives pounced on him with their heavy bolos and two handed kampilans.

Escrima is more than just stick fighting although that is the biggest part. Any knowledge is better than no knowledge, and conbining escrima with what you already know would be a huge plus.
