Pretty normal for some kids- they learn a new word , check it off in their 'mind' vocabulary book- and move on. Eventually you'll hear all the words again ~ he's most likely for now, taking in new surrounding and new words- and they'll all start coming out again!

With both my kids i always seemed like they took a short "break" before an absolute "breakthrough" in vocabulary!

I always advise others to run it by their pediatrician as well! They can either look into a problem for you- or put your mind and heart at rest and let you know its all fine!

My daughter did the same thing. She would just cry instead of try to say words, or just stare at ya instead of try to repeat. She's 2 now. I talked to her pediatrician about it and he recommended speech therapy. She was in it for 6 months. From when she was 18 months till she turned 2 and now she speaks above her age level. She uses full sentences and words that 2 year olds usually dont say clearly like "dinosaur." I was skeptical at first and argued that she wasn't stupid and didn't need any kind of therapy but then decided it couldn't hurt anything and tried. She loved her therapy days. It was basically like the therapist was playing games with her and she just started talking. An hour a week for 6 months was definately worth it.

Probably because he's getting what he wants for less effort. Do not give him what he wants until he says the word. If he knows the word, he WILL say it before he starves. If he doesn't, have him checked for learning disabilities again. Why would he have to talk if he can just grunt and get what he wants? It's human nature and you have to do the hard work of parenting to train it out of him.

maybe he just doesn't want to right now. he may not have a learning disability but does he have a hearing disability. my son was just like that could say about 20 words then one day he stopped and it seemed like he was mute. turns out he had fluid build up in his ear drums which is like hearing underwater which can confuse young ones when talking.

I believe there is NO autism involved due to the fact you state he KNOWS words,I to have a son around this age and he is fine and healthy, doc says!
he too, hushes up and points or whatever, just cause its easier!
but we tell him we dont understand you and he eventually says his words!
sometimes we stand ten minutes waiting, but he says it! LOL
boys are just not as big on chatter as girls! I know,I have 2 girls also! they talked earlier and had WAY more words than he does! but dont get upset, dont freak out, just say I dont know what you want, and praise HUGE for words used!! Id say if the doc says there are no problems,he is just bein a turd! LOL thats what our boy does

My son is around that age and wasn't talking much either. I brought it up to his pediatrician at his checkup and he wasn't concerned. I'll tell you exactly what he said. First he asked, does he have older siblings? (Yes a sister) If they understand him, they'll often speak for him and tell you what he needs. Or maybe you(mom) already understands what he is saying or wanting and giving it to him. In those cases, he sees no need or rush to talk. Second thing he asked was does he listen when you speak? Can he follow simple directions like "pick up that toy" or " give me your shoe". I said yes, he does that. The doctor said, "great, then I'm not worried at all and you shouldn't be either. Next time you come in you'll probably be asking how do I get him to STOP talking so much?!" He was right, shortly after he turned 2, his vocabulary and communication improved tremendously! Overnight it seems! He is a VERY talkative and articulate 5 yr old now. Be patient mom.

He could be upset about something or perhaps having a hearing problem. Some times young babies talk only to stop later due to hearing problems. Contact your Dr. Also, continue to talk to him, about everything your doing

Don't give him what he is pointing to. Make him say what he wants. A little boy in my son's playgroup has delayed speech because his nanny and mom would give him things when he pointed to him. This WILL harm his development if you don't stop giving in.

Have you thought about baby sign? I know it might seem like that would further delay speech, but it actually helps. I've heard great things about the signing times videos.

My youngest one tried to pull this trick on me and I flat out refused to allow him to get away with it. If he wanted something and just pointed - I would just ignore him until he opened his mouth and asked clearly and properly. I refused to give into him and he stopped his bad habit rather fast.
