If you are average in height and swing speed, try a used set from a golf store such as Golf Galaxy. They have stations where you can try the clubs. Once you have a set of irons save your money to invest in a good driver, etc. I would recommend staying away from a blade type of iron since they are usually the least forgiving unless you are an experienced golfer. If you buy a "brand" name, you can usually get a better trade in for them when you upgrade down the road. Any set of clubs though will not help much if you do not put the time into practice. Good luck.

Use clubs that you feel comfortable with. I got my irons for $100 on ebay 2-PW. Already with True Temper Dynamic Stiffs. ...Old Titleists, you can't beat it.

Some great clubs are available at garage sales, but if yours aren't so great, you may want to just shop around.

Ask yourself what you don't like about your clubs, and what you'd like to have which your current set lacks. (bigger sweet spot, offset, weighting, or just the overall look)

Even if you find a very expensive set that you like the look/feel of, you can always find a similar (or even knock off) set that will suffice.

Just remember, clubs will do very very little with your overall golf game, so make sure you know exactly what you want.

I love watching the rich guys at the course with $5,000+ Golf sets who biff just about every other shot!

Adams dunlop Slazenger are types of cheap clubs that work but are not great. But a set is only 100 to 200 dollars.

Nike Cleveland Taylormade might not be right for you since cash is tight so probably just stick with those top one that work.

I buy most of my golf equipment from Rock Bottom Golf. I suggest that you visit their web site and look around. I bought some nice, MacGregor V-Foil M565 Speed, forged irons with Rifle Flighted shafts brand new last December for $249.00 ($700 irons).

neonman stole my answer. golf galaxy or golf discount -- either one depending on where you live... is a great place to go to get good used clubs. especially if you like the sport, you should go check it out :) DO NOT buy clubs off ebay... you can not try them out before you buy them. Like where at a golf store, you can - they let you go over and hit balls and they will adjust the clubs for your height.
good luck!
