The original joke (which I heard more than 40 years ago) was this way. A guy showed up at work one day with both ears burned pretty badly. His co-workers asked how it happened. He said he was wrapped up in the final minutes of the Dallas Cowboys game when the phone rang. His wife had been ironing clothes just behind his lazy boy where they also kept the phone. So when the phone rang, he reached for it without taking his eyes off the TV as not to miss a play. He grabbed the iron by mistake and pressed it to his ear, burning it. Then he answered the phone and it was a wrong number. "But", asked the co-workers "how did you burn the OTHER ear?" "Oh, that." he responded, "The wrong number called back a minute later!"
