I don't mind my driver because I hit the ball well with it. But I do hate when people use it over and over and over again. I mean, you have other clubs in your bag that are getting absolutly NO use! I went to hit some balls the other day at a driving range at a golf academy and a kid has his bag sitting by the putting green and his putter was in his bag so I walked over and asked him what he was doing and he said "did you know a driver can be used for a putter? it works great!" I asked him if his putter was broken, it was a callaway 2-ball and he said "no, its brand new but i like putting with my driver now." thats the only time ive seen that happen. People need to mix it up a little when there playing -- use the driver on longer holes but use an iron on shorter holes, it works too! I really don't understand why people use there driver so much. When I go to the range people by me always just hit the driver the whole time -- I hit maybe 10-15 balls with my driver then I go to my irons. Ughh yes i don't understand why drivers are so amazing these days! I will admit that I use my driver quite a bit on the course, but I hit it so straight and far that I want to use it. When I get the oppurtunity, I always use a different club - I can get tired of my driver. Good question and point :)

I don't mind heavy use of the driver.
The thing that bothers me is the direction golf and the golf manufacturers are going.
460 cc drivers with 46" shafts are the norm. That is absolutely ridiculous. Its like trying to swing a watermelon at a watermelon seed. Yeah.. you'll hit it, but there is no control. I don't buy the "large sweet spot" garbage that is being shoved down our throats by the manufacturers and golf world.
A 460cc driver is harder to square up at impact, versus smaller drivers (< 400cc).
You wonder why most players hit their 3 woods better than their drivers? Well, along with the loft of a 3 wood, its also the smaller volume. Most 3 woods are 250cc or less. Its so much easier to square up a 3 wood compared to a 460cc driver.
I believe the most optimal driver for most amatuers would be something around 400cc (or less.. i.e.. 380cc, etc..), 12 degrees of loft playing off of a 43.5" - 44" shaft. This type of driver would be money in the bank for most players with a half way decent swing.

Well let's see.. On a typical 18 hole course, you have 4 par 3's so I don't use my driver then, and on tight par 4's, I'll use a 3 wood or long iron, so I don't use them then either. Not to mention the other 70 approach shots and putts...so if I use a driver 10-12 times a round, that would be a lot. So no, it's not the only thing people EVER use, at least me anyway.

I tee off with my three wood and five wood. I am right with you bro. I cannot stand the over use of drivers. On holes with tight fairways, people do not understand that drivers are not accurate enough to keep the ball in the fairway. Woods are much more accurate off the tee so I use them on shorter holes and on tighter fairways. Doing this really improves my game. Only when I have a real wide fairway do I actually pull out the driver. Excelent question.

My driver doesn't piss me off at all because I can hit it fairly straight and it's the longest club in my bag. Doesn't mean I use it every time though. If I have a very narrow fairway or it's lined on both sides with trees, I'll tee off with a #3 hybrid.

i use my driver quite often but i can controll it....alot of times at least on my home course there are dog legs so i like to try to get past the trees or to get to an ideal straight shot to the green....if the fairway is small or i have to hit over water i will use a club that is easier to hit....so i do use my driver but for strategic reasons...i will admit that many people just use the driver because it is the biggest club

I think you can thank John Daly for that. Until he started playing everybody played strategically. But when he started hitting the ball on tour in a monster type grip and rip it style. All the wanta bees started doing it and it hasnt slowed down a bit
