I'm not too surprised that this conspiracy has gained so much traction considering the 9/11 conspiracy popularity. Even the man made global warming is somewhat believable to the untrained eye.
Coal and oil burning is right there in your face for everyone to see and hear. What is invisible is the CO2 that is given off by every leaf on every flower, bush and tree as far as you can see when they all fall in the autumn and decompose. Not to meantion all the CO2 that comes out of the ocean every second. All of this is eclipsed by the CO2 that comes out of volcanos.
But lets forget about CO2 for a second. The SUN changes the temperature of any location by 20 degrees or more every single DAY, depending on what time of the day or night it is. It also changes the local temperature by as much as 60 degrees depending on a slight change in angle due to changing seasons. Why is is so hard to believe that a change in global temperature of as much as 4 degrees can possibly be due to Sun activity?

I think people fall for man made global warming so easily because they have a need to feel like they are doing something important in their lives, and what can be more important than "saving the planet?"

Bob, you claim that global warming skeptics make ridiculous and unsupported arguements. What about the ridiculous arguements made by global warming fanatics? I have read such ridiculous claims as "it is hot now than it has ever been," "it has never warmed this quickly, so it must be man made," "global warming caused hurricane katrina (that is a current question on Y!A)," "global warming causes tsunamis." All of these global warming proponent claims are simply untrue.

Of course EnragedParrot, in the answer right before you claims that the sun cannot be responsible for global warming, because the sun's output hasn't increased in "forty or maybe seventy years." This is another crazy claim by a global warming fanatic. The fact is that studies by NASA and the American Geophysical Union show that increases in solar irradiance have caused MOST of the warming over the last century. Take a look at the first link where NASA notes that studies show a marked increase in solar irradiance since just the 1970s. This shoots down enragedparrots idea that the sun hasn't increased in output in 40 or more years.

Those arguments has been explained so many times that anyone not knowing the answer to this either doesn't want to know or is plain stupid. Sorry for being blunt.

The CO2 from fossil fuel isn't part of the natural carbon cycle hence it adds to the net effect of CO2 in our atmosphere. Everyone knows that. Proof here at the EPA site:
http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/science/stateofknowledge.html

On this site you can read:

"Scientists know with virtual certainty* that:

- Human activities are changing the composition of Earth's atmosphere. Increasing levels of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere since pre-industrial times are well-documented and understood."

*virtual certainty means more than 99% agreement.

Here's a site (EIA run under the current U.S. Government) that describes the carbon cycle and the net effect of anthropogenic CO2: http://www.eia.doe.gov/oiaf/1605/ggccebro/chapter1.html

And here's a site that explains why the sun cannot be responsible for the current warming trend: http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2007/jul/11/climatechange.climatechange1

Carbon dioxide released from decaying plants is part of the carbon cycle, and doesn't force the climate. It's the same carbon the plants used to grow in the first place. It simply removed it from the atmosphere for few years, then put back. There is no net increase in atmospheric CO2 from decaying plants.

CO2 cannot be released from the oceans unless the oceans reach a high enough temperature to allow it to happen. Anthropogenic global warming is doing just that. In fact, this feedback is expected to have an enormous effect on global warming in the future.

CO2 released from volcanoes isn't part of the carbon cycle, and it can force the climate. So you're were, amazingly, right about that one. however, since volcanoes also release massive amounts of sulfates, ash, and dust particles, they have a net cooling effect, not a warming one.

Lastly, scientists are fairly certain changes in solar activity can't be responsible for the current change because, well, there haven't =been= any changes in solar activity for at least the past forty, and possibly seventy, years, when warming has been fastest.

Yes CO2 is such a small small part of earths atmosphere how can any serious thinking person believe this causes global warming?
It is like a cult following and to dare to question anything except CO2 is causing a rise in temperature makes you a traitor.
It's not hard to see why so many young people fall for it though because some schools are showing Al Gore's film to all the students.
And they are in some cases taught more about this than subject matter that will help them succeed in life.

Because the deniers make ridiculous unsupported arguments like:

"All of this is eclipsed by the CO2 that comes out of volcanos."

The CO2 that comes out of volcanoes is less than 1% of what is generated by man. Overwhelming proof, from scientists:

http://www.geology.sdsu.edu/how_volcanoes_work/climate_effects.html

"However, a far greater amount of CO2 is contributed to the atmosphere by human activities each year than by volcanic eruptions. T.M.Gerlach (1991, American Geophysical Union) notes that human-made CO2 are dwarfed the estimated global release of CO2 from volcanoes by at least 150 times."

http://environment.newscientist.com/channel/earth/climate-change/dn11638

Click on the diagram in the upper right.

http://volcanology.geol.ucsb.edu/gas.htm

"Volcanoes contribute about 110,000,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year while man's activities contribute about 10,000,000,000 tons per year."

I could quote more sites all night.

But mostly because that's what the data says:

"I wasn’t convinced by a person or any interest group—it was the data that got me. I was utterly convinced of this connection between the burning of fossil fuels and climate change. And I was convinced that if we didn’t do something about this, we would be in deep trouble.”

Well of course that's quite easy.

Al Gore says it is true, and we all know he is one of the world's leading scientists.

Hollywood celebrities say so too and they are of course this centuries greatest intellects.

And lets not forget the liberal politicians, they all agree that man made global warming is a major crisis that must be addressed by more government spending and control, and of course, they have only our best interests at heart.

Can you do me a huge favor? Put your feet into a bucket of cement and have a friend dump you into the ocean. I would be glad to do it. I think the world would be a better place. Thanx alot hun!

The libs and enviro-nutters "fall" for anything that portrays humans as bad. That is their religion. Man is bad. Anything man does is bad. So when "global warming" became available as a bandwagon for the human haters to jump onto, it was the greatest thing that ever came down the pike.

People love to be scared. It puts some excitement in their otherwise dull lives.

Remember the excitement before Y2K? People were predicting planes falling from the sky and all banks losing money while the stock market would crash.
