The religious city of Tzfat (also known as Safed) in Northeast Israel is higher than Jerusalem. Thirty miles further northeast is Mount Hermon in the Golan Heights, which is the only place you can ski here (and it's a long way from Jerusalem). And just twenty miles south of Tzfat is the lowest city in Israel - Tiberias on the shore of the Sea of Galilee some two hundred metres below sea-level. That's why they call it a land of contrasts - an hour's drive can take you from snowy mountains to a tropical oasis...
