Yes. It will grow back out or you can buzz it all off later if it doesn't work out. Let him make little decisions like that, its good for him!

I never had an issue with letting my kids do whatever they wanted to do with their hair. However, not everyone feels that way and a mohawk is a pretty radical hair cut in some people's eyes. Will he be starting school soon? Is he going to be somewhere new where no one knows him? If you are concerned that others may have a negative judgement because of his hair cut, I would avoid it if he's starting somewhere new. It's just not worth the risk that your kid could be judged negatively because of a hair cut. But, if everyone already knows him and most people are likely to realize that it's just a hair cut -- I'd have no problem letting him do what he wants.
My son (who is now 11) wanted a mohawk for a long time but my husband didn't like the idea. He finally got one about 2 years ago and my son ended up not liking it himself!

My son is 6 and plays PeeWee football and he wanted a Mohawk so I cut it for him myself. He went to his first practice. All the other kids thought it was cool. The next day, some of the other kids come to practice with their hair up like a mohawk. This is my sons second year on the same team along with some of the others. His teacher called me about it but it does not break the guidelines for hair cuts.

Why would a 5 year old want a mohawk?

Personally, I think the mohawks look stupid so I wouldn't let him get one, but I'd let mine make a simple decision such as this one on his own.

Absolutely! They're cute. I would also ask him what the mohawk means to him.

No, I wouldn't personally, but really I don't think it 's such a big deal I'd be nuts over it. He's going into kindergarten right? He will not want to look to odd or scarry or strange to the other kids he's trying to befriend. Depends on how much it means to him. Perhaps a toned down version of one. The style salons for kids have this colored hair gel that would be a good alternative to offer him; it washes out but looks "cool" initially.

my friends let their son have one, he is 6... but only for a week.
on a side note, the more control a kid has over things like hair the less likely they are to do other things.
my mom always let me cut my hair how i wanted and dye it whatever i wanted, and i never had the desire to sleep around, drink, do drugs, etc.
my SIL was not allowed to do anything with her hair, her parents made the decisions.... she slept around, did drugs, drank etc. i asked her once if she had been alowed to do what she wanted with her hair if she would have gone to extremes in other aspects of her life, she said she probably would not have. but her parents did not let her do anything...
