There's a lot of good brands out there, the most important thing is to know what the person your buying the guitar for likes. It's up to the individual, some like a certain action, and sound, so you'd be wise to find out what brand this person likes before you invest in something that big. As for brand names Gibsons, Taylors, Fenders, Yamaha, Ovations, Les Paul, Strads, I could go on for quite a while naming brands but if the person your buying this for doesn't like these it won't matter, so go for what he likes or give him a gift certificate for a music store so that he can put it towards what he wants, just don't buy him one without knowing what he's into. I play classical myself and I know I would never want anyone to buy me a guitar, I'd want to play it before I ever even though of buying it !!!!!!!!

That is subjective to each player. For the electrics, there are the Les Pauls, the Fender Stratocasters, the Gibson ES-335s, and the Gretsch 6120s. For the acoustics, Martin and Taylor win hands-down. I have two Gibsons, a Giannini, a Yamaha, and an HD-35 Martin. The latter captures my attention the most.

it all depends on the person and whether you are looking at electric or acoustic. all guitars sound differently including the same brand. great gift idea but i would recommend allowing them to pick it out themselves that way they get the one that sounds good to them.
