There are so many different kinds of 'salad' that without knowing more about you and what you like, no one can give you a 'perfect salad' ... but let me give you a good 'green salad' recipe ...
Get some 'baby greens' and some baby spinach and put those into a bowl. Chop up some roma tomatoes, some cucumber, some avocadeo, some raw mushrooms, and some red onion. Add some cooked 'boneless, skinless chicken breast' that has been cut into 'dice sized' pieces. Add some good cheese ... I love gorgonzola (it's an Italian blue cheese) but you can choose a good cheese that you like ... try 'extra sharp cheddar' or pepper jack or Jarlsberg. Mix well (toss well, that is) and serve with a good balsamic vinaigrette and some fresh garlic bread ... you'll have a 'good meal' in just a few minutes and have 'leftovers' for later meals, too.

I always, always add just a little bit of honey to the dressing, it takes away the edge without making it too sweet.
And I also like cheese in my salads, most often real (fresh) parmesan, or crumbled feta. Grated cheddar is also good.

I like my salads fairly well chopped, with honey mustard dressing. I like the following in it.
Romaine Lettuce (in bite-sized pieces)
Diced tomatoes
Diced onions
Diced hard boiled eggs
Diced celery
Diced carrots
Diced radishes
Diced mushrooms
Chopped pieces of bacon
Cooked kernels of corn
Sunflower seeds
It's usually better to assemble each one individually, with the base of lettuce having a scoop of each ingredient added to each plate. That way if anybody doesn't like a particular ingredient, it can be left off their plate rather than have them pick them out.

i personally like my salad with just a little bit of Romaine lettuce, and lots of tomatoes, peppers (i prefer red, orange, yellow), cucumbers, chick peas, kidney beans, hard boiled eggs, baby corns, and ranch dressing. but i would happily eat lettuce, tomato, and cucumber. Outback has the best salads, and that's all that's in theirs, with some cheese on top, and fresh garlic croutons. yummy.

some of my friends think its weird, but I love this salad (it's Ukrainian food since that's I'm from and my family always makes it)
chop up tomatoes into big pieces, add chopped up while onions, salt & pepper, and sour cream instead of dressing. I love it! and you have your daily dose of antioxidants.
And also I like sliced cucumbers with some onions, salt and sour cream.

Make your own dressing. You'll never go back to bottled. You can experiment with recipes you find online or in cookbooks, or try your own. Some acid (vinegar or lemon juice), oil and herbs are all you need. And garlic is nice, too.
Homemade is much cheaper than bottled, too.

My Grandmother in law taught me to use every vegetable and legume available and add dry fruit - then you use French dressing and kids as well as adults will eat it up (lettuce is optional).

Be flexible with your salad. Add whatever you like and hold whatever you don't like.
