For light loads a single strap (that goes diagonally from one shoulder to the opposite side of your chest) is better for your back, neck and shoulders than a regular shoulder bag, but still not nearly as good as a two-strap that distributes the load across both shoulders and balances it over your center of gravity. If you are carrying more than 1 hardcover textbook, you are better off with a regular backpack.

If you do use a one-shoulder bag you should alternate from the right to the left side regularly -- this will delay stress on one side or the other.

I like my single-strap bag for everyday stuff (like riding the bus, going to a class) but when I need to carry more than 3 or 4 pounds, I'm much happier with the backpack.
