My cat, chipmunk, is a four year old male. He is going for his neuter surgery tomorrow morning. I have a problem here trying to understand the form that my vet gave to me. The surgery costs 100.00
It suggested me to add, Health Check (blood work) $44.00, Blood Pressure $18, and Fluid IV $58, or Fluid SC for $45.
My vet procedure is just feline Castrate for removing the testicles in my cat's rear.
So do you all suggest me to add those things and what's your opinion? Confused and dazed with informations been given to me.
My cat surgery is at 8:45 am tomorrow morning. Hope everyone help me on time.
thanks

Blood work is never a waste of money if you can afford it--it gives the vet a lot of information about the inside organ function of the cat. Fluids help support kidney function and blood pressure--very important when a pet or person is anesthetized. Low blood pressure can lead to kidney damage, which is why monitoring is recommended.
At our practice we don't "offer" these things, they are mandatory for most surgeries. Exceptions are cat neuters--the cat is given an IV injection of a very short acting anesthetic, like propoflo. The surgery itself takes about 2 minutes. The cat is given a pain injection and sent home with a few days of pain medication. That's it. I'd stay away from low cost clinics--they cut corners to save money. Most vets aren't out to drum up business by adding on extra services, they just want to provide the best care possible--which is what most people want anyway.

1. Health Check (blood work) $44.00 (checks all of the internal organs to make sure nothing is worng before putting him under anesthesia. If there is something going on with say the kidneys, this could be a problem as the kidneys help to filter the anesthesia out of his system.
2. Fluid IV $58 -IV is in the vein. Fluids are run during surgery to help flush the anesthesia out of his system.
3. Fluid SC for $45- SC is subcutaneous or under the skin. Fluids given this way are absorbed slower therough the skin.
With your cat being 4, either choice is fine for him. If he was over 6, I would say definitely go with those options since he is geriatric. The actual surgery takes like 15 minutes. Think too whether he is helathy or not. Either choice is fine.

Those are just routine things that they offer. The blood work is to see if anything is wrong with the liver and things like that. The blood pressure is just to monitor him during the procedure and the fluids can be for a couple of reasons. They are first fluids and that line also offers a quick way to administer meds incase something goes wrong. None of them you have to get so it is completely up to you. Good Luck.

That's a lot for a simple nip `n' tuck. I'd find a more reasonable vet. Have you checked with the local Humane Society? They often have qualified vets come around to do a low-cost spay/neuter clinic.

You can just go ahead and have him neutered. Those are just suggestions that vets add to promote their business. He will be just fine without those extra charges. Sometimes charges like that are suggested in case something happens, and if they are done, you can't blame the vet for the problems or death.

OUCH!!!! poor cat.....the vet said you might need those, but you don't. He just wants more money. Vets don't make as much as doctors, so they want every cent they can get. my advice, let the cat enjoy his last night of freedom...he deserves that much, and afterwards, let him sleep and give him a bag of frozen peas or cat food in his case.

don't need all those extras, just get him nutered. and I would suggest finding another vet, none of my cats needed any of that stuff done. and also $100.00 is a lot to have your cat fixed. My vet charges $16.00 for boys and $27.00 for girls. DON"T FEED YOU KITTY ANYTHING AFTER MIDNIGHT>
