When I start to take my SKS apart, I start by taking off the recoil spring protector behind the bolt, but it is not coming off when I rotate the pin and pull it out to make it pop out? How do I get it off?

Tap the top of the bolt cover with a piece of wood or a hammer "handle" after you have rotated the lever and pulled out the retainer bar out to your right as far as it will go........
The Bolt Cover should now come loose easily.

Make sure you have released the bolt and it is in the forward position. The rear top portion of the receiver should lift right off after you pull the retaining pin out; if not use a rubber mallet or piece of wood to give it a thump or two to loosen it. It may have gotten water in it and rusted or gummed together or who knows what; it is a machine and we are humans, I hope.

Cycle the bolt, the dust cover should move up and off.
