You eat at your own risk from street vendors.

Well, mostly all the food carts are just food carts, they don't really differ much. The only one that I can truly say is different, and is clean and safe to eat at is one called Hallo Berlin, they also have a restaurant way over west. The food cart is off of 5th Avenue on 53 or 54th Street. The hot dogs aren't like the usual Sabretts that you get, they are all kinds of German wursts and you get a choice of it on a platter or on a roll. I'm not much for eating at a food cart, but these are wonderful, worth taking the time to try.

No, not really.
However, look for long lines and well dressed patrons at some of the carts. That is usually a good indication of a "safe" cart. You can avoid expensive chains by finding the small coffee shops and local diners.

Though clearly set up for tourists, the food vendors/carts across the street from Radio City are good. There are many different kinds, and plenty of space to sit and enjoy your meal. Not to mention possible celeb sightings as you are next to NBC, Fox News, Radio City and Rockerfeller Center.

34th street between 8th and 9th
across the street from the New Yorker Hotel and right outside of the Lowes Movie Theater.

Rafiq's Chicken (and/or Lamb) and Rice... its a middle easteren/indian/asian flavor combo
$3.99 for chicken, mixed rice, and veggies.

They can also put it in a wrap/pita but i prefer the rice.

The cart is clean, and the guys there are friendly!

There is also another good chicken and rice street vendor on 53rd Street and 6th near the MOMA (he''s only there in the evenings)

Try the Grand Central Terminal. There is a food court in there alongside with some great foodshops as well.

Check out a place called Cafe Europa. It's clean, the food is delicious and fresh and very reasonably priced. They are all over Manhattan - Enjoy!

I'm not sure about NYC, but in Washington state the little trailers that sell Mexican food are heavily regulated by the health department and they have authentic Mexican food for cheap.
