Yes, most of those are scams. The scam starts with dangling a huge prize in your face and then the hook is set when something happens and you need to pay some money to get the prize. Usually, the reason is an international difficulty.

The biggest industry in Nigeria is such scams. If you get anything like this from Nigeria then ignore it there is a 99% chance it is a scam.

Spookhunter has a good point, lotteries are run to raise money. They sell tickets and use part of the profit to pay the winners. If you don't have to pay for the ticket then your ticket is worth what you paid for it; nothing.

I am not going to say you are gullible, you have to learn sometime and you were smart enough to ask first. A lot of people didn't and they are why those kinds of scams are still working.

One simple rule of live is "There ain't no such thing as a free lunch." Normally, people don't give you something for nothing. Even a lot of charity is tied to favorable publicity, the feel good feeling of doing it, and as a way to help business. If nothing else it makes the business look more humane. If you see a program that offers you something for nothing then you are probably going to have to pay along the way or get nothing.

Look at the huge casinos in Las Vegas. They are just giving money away, offering free rooms, food and other things to the richest clients. But, how do they stay in business, and how do they afford such huge hotels and lavish programs? The reason is that they play on human greed to make a lot more money then most people think. Those rich folks who come in and get all those free things earn it with their huge gambling losses. If they don’t play or don’t lose then the casino does its best to get rid of them quickly. Its human nature to want to get the best value you can and a lot of people take it too far trying to get something for nothing. Most of the time those poor people get taken in a scam.

I have gotten several letters infoming me that I had won the lottery, I always check these type of emails out, well, after the the third scam saying that I had won, I would say all were probably scams because none checked out except as you have figured out by now are scams to get money &/or steal your idenity.

They asked for an email address that they already know? That information is personal and could result in identity theft. Also you are likely to get bombarded with requests which covers their 'fees'. You hand them these fees and they will just run off.
Theres no such thing as a free lottery =)
