well a lot of the reasons why there's governors is that its mostly for the car, for ex. when at speeds of 120 mph and over not a lot of cars can handle keeping an engine cool while trying to maintain top speed or (wot) the engine heat from oil and transmission fluid will begin to slow the car until it either stops from overheating or you blow a piston rod or any other part that could result in engine brakedown,or worse like hitting a tree or something but another reason is that not a lot of people can process some objects passing you at 120mph trust me if you've ever been going that fast while driving it gets really hard not to hit anything while dodging traffic and trying not to kill your self,

Based on crash safety tests they make their assesment. Also many of the parts on the car may not function or even break at higher speeds, so for warentee purposes the speed is governed. That's why if you reprogram the chip the warentee voids. Earlier especially with older cars emissions were also taken into account, but now with advancements in catalytic converters many times the air going into an engine is more polluted that the air coming out.

That mustangs top speed was never 175 mph..... yes all american cars are speed limited by governors.... sports cars of course have higher limits, corvette, mustang, camaro ect.... but never over 15o mph.... cars like a taurus or minivan will have low limits like 100 mph..... really no need to go 150 mph in the states when the highways are what 70mph tops?

The old 80's stangs with the 302 and a 4barrel carb would go 140 with 210 horsepower...Now the V-Six mustang has 210 horsepower but they're limited to 105 mph...speed governors suck!!

the top speed of the Bugatti Veyron is 253 MPH. That is 407 KPH. That's the fastest. No governor, 4 turbochargers.

It has to do with the speed rating of the tires. If they are only rated to a 150mph, then the car will be governed below that speed. Legal and liability questions arise after that.

My truck (2004 silverado) cuts out around 95 MPH - computer controlled. My older 1990 Chevy truck (before they had the electronic limiter) would do 127 MPH

Top speed is a combination of vehicle weight, vehicle power, vehicle drag/aerodynamics, and very importantly: vehicle's gearing. Different gear ratios can change top speed DRAMATICALLY. Generally when you increase your lower end acceleration speed (faster 0-60, etc), you decrease your top speed, and vice versa.

It is also based on the speed rating of the tires that the manufacturer installs.
