When my father turned 80 he became obsessed with getting his affairs in order. He could not find his medals. I went to the Veterans Center in my hometown and took his original copy of his discharge papers (a copy would do I am sure, you can get one at your local courthouse, as returning soldiers had to report when they returned home and file their discharge papers)There was a form to fill out and they will replace them "once" free of charge. I just requested all his medals be replaced (found originals later) I added that my father a PFC had been told by an officer he was going to have him awarded a bronze star, but he said he thought his "Sgt got it", well, 6 months later, Christmas Eve, the postman delivered a package and in it was all his medals and the "Bronze Star" with a letter for the reason for the award. I believe the form was sent to MO> Check with the Veterans Center in your area. They can help you. Patti p.s. Daddy was a machine gunner in the 88th Infantry Division, Blue Devils

It's not likely you will find anything. The 1973 fire destroyed a lot of the WWII time frame records. You can always try though. Go the the US Archives web site. They have the rules concerning "who" is authorized to request copies "if" they exist.

Good Luck

PS. You did not say if there was a copy of his DD214 available. If so and the Bronze Star is not mentioned, but he is authorized the Combat Infantry Badge, a law passed in 1947 granted upgrade of the CIB to the Bronze Star. The CIB at that time required a write up for a meritorious act.
