i know someone who lied about having insurance what is the penalty for lying to an officer and not having insurance in illinois?

Technically, making a false statement to the officers is a separate offense. In most cases, the officer forgot whatever you said about insurance by the time he got back to his patrol. In my state, they indicate on the citation that you did not SHOW proof of insurance. Telling them you have it does not make a difference. If you don't show proof to the court when you pay the ticket, you are fined for lack of insurance in addition to whatever you were stopped for.

I am not sure what the penalty might be, but I hope your"friend" doesn't get caught!! a fine for no insurance in my state is like 500.00$ ...good luck with that!

If that person did not get cited for it when it happened, most likely there is no penalty(ie. you couldn't turn the person in for it, unless the PD there is really bored.)

If the officer cited them for it, there are many different outcomes depending on what they were charged with.

They could very easily be arrested.
