Give her a compliment and an insult at the same time. My favorite is... "Yeah, your hot, but what else do you have going on?"

This tells her a couple of things. #1 you think she is attractive in a sexual matter. #2 that being hot isn't good enough for you. She needs to prove herself to you. #3 this is a good thing because if you have the balls to ask her a question like that then you must have something serious going on yourself.

So approach her with that attitude in mind. That yeah she is attractive, but you want to know if she is good enough for you beyond that. It gives you the upper hand and seems as though you are coming from a position of strength. And chicks dig strength. Not just physical strength, but strength of character.

Depends on your situation in all honesty.
Every woman and situation is different, and should be handled accordingly.
Ex:
-Some women like to be approached, others don't.
Observe (not stalk) her a bit, what kind of person is she?
Is she very out going, very easy to talk to, bold?
Usually, those women like a stand up man that just come forward and say "Hey, I've been thinking, I would like to get to know you a bit better, so, I was wondering if maybe you and I could get together sometime?"
If she accepts this offer, ask her what her favorite food is, her favorite past time, or if she likes movies, sports or the theater,,,,
-we love it when a man actually shows us that he is interested in what WE like, and what WE have interest in.

Now, if she is kinda shy, quiet, stand offish, not really the social butterfly-she either isn't interested in you, or she is just a docile, shy, quiet person by nature, or a very closed up person for personal reasons- therefore,
maybe some harmless banter (conversation) to try to get her to 'come out of her shell' might be useful for an extended amount of time before you ask her out. Some require an established friendship before the trust can begin-
this also allows you a chance to see if you are really interested in them or if it was their mystery,,,,
-Then, once you think you have figured an interest of hers out, say "hey, remember the other day, you said something about how you haven't been to a museum in a while-- well, I was wondering, if you would like to go to one this weekend sometime, I'll drive, and maybe lunch or dinner while we're out?"
Their reaction to your statements will tell you if they are truly interested or not, just read their faces, and their body language,,,,looks and body language can say a thousand words without saying anything-
Good luck Casanova,,,,
hope a woman's standpoint helps---

From the front.
Approaching from the rear may be considered stalking.
Annnnnd, she may have a gun.
