St. Augustine invented the concept of the soul in 390 AD. Augustine combined Plato's Idealism with Aristotle's Solipsism and asserted that God loans each new person a tiny bit of His own immortal essence at the moment of their birth. (These days Christians insist "at the moment of their conception," but this isn't supported by the historical record.) Augustine maintained that the experience of living grew God's gift into a human soul that returned to God in Heaven, when the human died. The invention of the soul answered two important theological questions. The soul explained the origin of conscious awareness using a combination of Idealism and Solipsism. It also explained the mechanism required for human immortality. (Christ described immortality in terms of paternalistic allegories and did not specify how it actually worked.)

If Augustine's explanation is used, cloning makes no difference whatsoever, since such babies have no soul until they are born. If the modern Christian interpretation is used, it still makes no difference. If "test tube babies" have a soul, so must those conceived by cloning technology. Why should it matter whether the gametes are 'in vivo' or 'in vitro' when they fuse?

Personally, I don't think souls actually exist. Remember, Augustine was a "philosopher" and, as such, was not required to substantiate his speculations with actual facts.

Cloning is not "creating life"; it is TINKERING with life that already exists.Taking car parts from other cars and putting them together a car doesn't mean you "created" a car; the car parts and the blueprint of what constitutes a "car" already EXIST. When scientists can bring together the building blocks of life, the peptides and polypeptides and create DNA and "genes from the "ground up", and then built a germ cell to hold it, and then come up with their OWN version of a womb NOT already belonging to a living creature, and THEN get their "germ cell to grow to full term,THEN maybe they can claim to have "created life". Until then, they are riding on God's coattails, and shouldn't be taking any bows just yet.

PS I have always wondered WHY the Raelians made such a big deal about "cloning"; why would we need 'cloning" in an already overpopulated world? Could anything be more USELESS? When I look at that Rael guy, I want to tell him that if his "aliens" want to be a BIG HIT and be REAL REAL famous and popular EVERYWHERE, then, instead of 'cloning", they should come up with a cure for MALE PATTERN BALDNESS. Instant fame and fortune, guaranteed!

How do babies obtain a soul when conceived though normal means?

Where does that soul come from? Are they recycled? If so where do all the extra ones come from with the growing population?

Are they created as new? How? By what process do they go into the zygote/embryo/fetus, and when?

Could it be that the much simpler explanation is that there are no souls, only the chemical and electrical activity in the brain that gives us the ability to be self aware.

The principal is exactly the same as more natural processes of creating life. THEY DON'T OBTAIN A SOUL.

They do not. Animals have spirits not souls. Animals do not reason and are not morally responsible. However should scientists ever clone a human I suspect there are plenty of discarnate entities which would be delighted to slip into something more comfortable and "possess" the body.

Yeah, souls aren't real. That's the scary thing about cloning. You're creating another person, exactly the same as you. It could virtually destroy the world.

They are just recreating the mistakes that God created and then allowed to become extinct before God created all species in the modern era of evolution. Including mankind.
