La casa es roja. Ser is when you are always, estar is be temporary.

Yo soy hombre. I am a man.
Yo estoy saltando. I am jumping.

Use "ser" when the condition is perceived as permanent. Of course, the house can be repainted blue, but that's stretching things. "Estar" is used for situations perceived as temporary, such as feelings or locations. Example: Estoy bien = I feel well. Estoy en casa = I'm home. This will become easier as you use the language. There are some exceptions (or seeming exceptions), but these will be memorized.
