It is not a dandelion seed, for this 'pod' has no stem. For the life of me I have no idea what it is called or from what plant it comes from. I live in Canada, so its origin must be from North america. Help!!

milkweed and dandelion both produce the floating seeds...
the dandelion, related to chicory, sometimes blanched and used as a salad green, has a yellow, fully double flower, on a hollow stem the resembles a drinking straw.
when a dandelion flower is ripe, it is even;y covered with oblong seeds, each seed having a3/8 inch shaft and a perfect little parachute on top.
if they are picked carefully, the seeds will remain attached until the wishmaking child blows them off.
The sap of the dandelion, and other members of the family (of which lettuce is also a member) produce a bitter white latex that contains alkaloids similar to opium.
