I have worked with kids for 36 years and have never had this problem- I'm at a total loss. I am the nanny for a very difficult 5 yr old- he still wears pull-ups for bed and frequently wets at naptime. He doesn't just wet the diaper or pants- I sometimes have to wash his complete bedding twice a day! I think he does this after waking up rather than going into the bathroom. Today- again- he pooped in his pants! A terrible mess. A year ago, he was doing this and then spreading it all over his rugs! PLEASE give some suggestions- not so much as to how to stop it, but what discipline after the fact. I have made him sleep in the living room near me when it has happened before and this has worked. Any other suggestions?????? Thanks

I have tried the "Be nice and just clean it up route"- it obviously isn't working very well- I've had this child in my care for over a year. PS His parents make a big joke out of it

Again- I've also made him clean it up- I didn't help a bit and it was awful, but I made him do it. Obviously THAT didn't work, either! Remeber, I've been doing this work for 36 yrs and know a lot of tricks, but THIS KID HAS ME BAFFLED on SO many fronts!!! and his parents are NO help, just a terrible hinderance. AND I won't look for another job- this one pays unbelievably well and has benefits that most nanny gigs don't have!

Do not punish him, that will not work. If he is constantly wetting and having bowel movements and the pullup diaper does not contain the mess, first--switch to a regular tape tab diaper. You can tape the diaper on tighter than a pullup and the diapers I found hold more than pullups. Pampers have a new size 7 diaper that will fit him just fine, my 5 year old wears these diapers at nite for wetting and we have not had a leaky diaper yet. Secondly--use the plastic pants used for cloth diapers over the disposable diaper. This will contain it all.

In my experience I found the best discipline for things like this is no discipline. Try disregarding the whole situation. If he does it then just say oh dear a little accident. Never mind I will clean it up. Then tell him in a really nice voice to next time try and use the toilet or call me and I will take you to the toilet. He may like all that attention of being told off as a lot of kids do, especially those ones who don't get any attention from the people they love. He could be behaving like this because he is attention seeking or there could be a problem in the bathroom. Sometimes kids don't like going in bathrooms because there are spiders on the ceiling or something like that. Maybe he had a bad experience in the bathroom. Who knows. This little boy just needs reassurance, not discipline.

As long as there are no medical problems causing this - then have him clean himself - he might do it again thinking he won't have clean himself - but make him. It is not punishing him, it is teaching him that if he makes a mess he as to be the one to clean it up. Try it - it has worked for me.
