How about experience?
Twenty-some years ago, my stepfather's mother died of cancer. She was in a nursing home, and we were all aware that the end was near.
My niece Wendi and I were in my room watching TV when we started to get a strange case of the creeps, as I call it. I noticed that my dog was acting oddly, and at one point we both felt as if a hand was placed on the backs of our necks. We were terrified, and decided to go to bed.
After turning out the lights, we noticed in one corner of the room a ball of light dancing around--an orb, if you will. This light was about the size of a tennis ball, glowed with radiance, yet had no beam.
Scared to death (we were young) we pulled the covers over our heads and fell asleep. Passed out from fright is more like it.
The next morning, I told my mother what we had seen, and she replied, "Hazel's dying, you know." Later that afternoon, Hazel passed away.
We learned that the previous night, right around when we started getting creepy feelings, she had been placed on life support. She had been declared brain-dead at about that time, and other body functions ceased the next day.
That incident is when I started to believe that we possess souls. I have to believe this, because I have no other explanation for the light we saw, the things we felt.
If I believe that we possess souls, then I am inclined to believe in an afterlife. After all, where would a soul go? What would it do? What would be the reason if it was only to die?
So I have reached the conclusion that we are born with souls, and that they are what gives us our humanity. When we die, or in some instances lose all chance of conscious awareness (brain-death) our souls leave us, to continue on their journey.
Where we go, what we do, I haven't a clue. My own beliefs are that we remain as a form of energy, occasionally interacting with the living.
I blogged all of this a year ago. Your sister may have read it--she's been to my 360--and with what you are facing right now, you may be interested in reading it, too.
You will need to scroll down, this is one of my first blogs, and maybe you will find some peace with what I have written there. If your sister wants, she may visit my 360 again also.
I hope that on this day, things are going a little better for you.
And even with my odd set of beliefs, I still call myself an atheist, albeit a spiritual one.

Err,
Um,
Because they don't want to die when they die.
Edit:
For the people who claim that the soul is energy and so can not be destoryed - does that mean that the energy in a battery will go on forever? Damn, why is it I have to keep replacing them?
Or could it be that this is a trite answer into which no thought has gone at all.

Can you figure the one you consider your God being so powerful to create something as wonderful as a soul and then just let it die when the body wears out and can no longer sustain life. That doesn't even make sense. There has to be something, I think that no matter what you believe, if you truly believe it, be it that you go to heaven, your reincarnated, or you just fade away, that will be your ending.

"Eternity is a long time, especially towards the end." Woody Allen
Truth is like eternity. It is infinite. The moment you think you've arrived, you're furthest from it. So I like to say, Truth is Humility. That is why we say Jesus is the Truth and the Way, because in him is the humility, the heart of God.

The soul is energy and energy moves on. It just doesn't disappear and vanish into nothing. It moves on or changes into something else. Energy is eternal.

It FEELS like I have one. Plus I really WANT it to be true.
That is the best argument there is and it's not really an argument, ... more like wishful thinking.
