It all depends on your position and where you are deployed. Eventhough America is currently dealing with military struggles in the Middle East, there is no guarantee your infantry will sent there, although there is a pretty good chance.

Infantrymen are the ones on the front lines shooting people and whoever you're shooting at will be shooting at you too. So obviously there is a real danger to it and there is a chance you can be killed. But the chances aren't all that extreme. Everyone flips out over the number of casulties in Iraq alone, but we've definatley killed a lot more than we've been killed. The US military is the most trained in the world so its soldiers actually know how to kill people and not just shoot at them.

There is a chance you can get killed, not an extreme one, but a definate possibilty nonetheless. But if you're choosing that career path you realize the sacerfices you have to make, and that could eventually end up being the ultimate sacerfice and give up everything, including your life.

You chances of getting killed depends on where you go and what you do..I know infantry soldiers who are on their 2 and 3rd tours over here and are fine and then there are drivers or other jobs having soldiers die. It is a risk we all take signing up. If you are really worry about dying pick a safer job like an office clerk, typist or andthing dealing with paperwork. I am know all kinds of jobs that send people out the gate and into harms way daily. You have to be very careful with picking your job now that we are fighting. But if you pay really close attention to your training you should be ok. Just make sure that whatever job you choose you want to do and would love and it is also something you would not mind risking your life doing...

You choose your career and take your chances. I did 21 years and never regreted a minute. I jumped into Panama going after Noriega (82nd Airborne), The Gulf War (82nd Airborne), and was attached to the 10th Mountain Division in Somalia. I am a former Airborne soldier, and Ranger Qualified, with 6 years in a Long Range Surveillance Unit.

Who knows? You might change your mind and decide to stay in for one term.

But for a 25-year career, the odds of getting killed aren't that high. Quite a few people are convinced that joining the military is a death sentence and a one-way ticket to Iraq. What a load of crap. Statistically, it's unlikely for a soldier to die in combat. In Vietnam alone, the average chance a US serviceman had of being killed there was 1.8%.

Chances of dying in a modern US Military in a long career? Not bloody likely.

Besides, most servicemen are willing to take the chance of not making it home for some overseas deployment.

Until you are 18 none they won’t send you to Iraq until you are. We had a Guy get to our unit with six months to go before he was 18 and he was not allowed to deploy. Think about a job that you can do when you get out of the Army and do that. Not too many Ground ponder jobs available after you leave the service

Go to college and be an officer.you can still retire at 42.Chances are slim you'd get killed. You're more likely to die in an auto accident.Statistically speaking that is.

this is somewhat of a morbid question, but understandably one you would want to know. my husband is an infantry soldier and was deployed to iraq in 05-06. there were alot of accidents, and lots of injuries, but we were lucky and only lost one soldier from the company throughout the whole deployment. it all depends on you, how well you learn your job and pay attention while your over in iraq, and it also depends on your other soldiers, and your leadership. hopefully you will be lucky enough to get good leaders who really care and work, and some others in your team that will take good care of you. good luck to you.

depends on if there is a war and how intense the conflict is. in Iraq your odds are pretty good that you will survive. you have a better chance of being killed in a car wreck here in America than in combat in Iraq.

I dunno Carlos. I think I'd hold off.. on putting in your retirement paperwork until you're a little closer.

99%+ of our troops return home breathing and begin training to go back again. Still at the rate the Surge is taking effect, that number could go up.

If the men who run the Military Industrial Complex in the USA have their way you are far less likely to survive to see 42 than most people your age.
